Rutgers University • Camden, New Jersey
The expansion of Rutgers University’s Law School entailed the addition of a four-story, 66,800-square-foot building with a below-grade basement as well as a multi-level bridge connector to the existing structure. The building features offices, classrooms, lecture halls, a moot court, a special events lounge, a new entrance lobby, a video-conferencing center, and a café. The project, which also involved renovations to the existing building, including the law library, resolved accessibility and security issues while providing significant new program space.
The new building and bridge connector are served by three air handling units (AHUs) located in a penthouse mechanical room above the fourth floor. Energy-conserving features include variable frequency drives on the AHUs, heating water pumps, and chilled water pumps; and premium efficiency motors. A direct digital control energy management and automatic temperature control system serve all of the new equipment. The project included lighting design for all interior spaces and the exterior landscape, featuring energy-efficient fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts.
