A Renovation and Expansion of a Performing Arts Venue

The renovation and expansion of the Friends School’s performing arts facility created a new glass atrium with a state-of-the-art control room floating above the lobby space. Theater-style sloped seating added capacity, while the removal of the main ceiling to expose the steel truss work allows for more flexibility in addressing acoustical requirements. Mueller Associates designed new HVAC systems for the project, which also included a new gallery and scene shop as well as renovations to the existing building to enhance the school’s Fine Arts program.

  • This addition does not completely defer to the existing building, and the team devised a skillful design for opening up ceiling trusses, and opening out the raked seating. It creates wonderful space…there is elegance in the wood box that maintains the original volume by externalizing the control room.
