Dedicated Spaces Support Preservation and Scholarly Work

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) maintains one of the nation’s finest collections of prints, drawings, and photographs as well as the world’s largest public holding of works by Henri Matisse. To expand the display of these collections and support the work of international scholars, the BMA recently opened adjoining centers prominently located on the museum’s first floor.

The 7,000-square-foot Nancy Dorman and Stanley Mazaroff Center for the Study of Prints, Drawings and Photographs provides dedicated space to experience the museum’s collection of more than 67,000 works on paper spanning from the 15th-century to the present day. The center includes an exhibition gallery, a study room for scholars and classes, a preparatory room, offices, publicly visible work areas, and enhanced storage, including cold storage for photography.

The adjacent 2,500-square-foot Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies is dedicated to the study of French artist Henri Matisse, with an exhibition gallery, study room, library, offices, and storage. The center will host conferences and lectures and facilitate the care of more than 1,000 of the artist’s works on paper. Highlights also include the installation of three large-scale stained glass windows.

Continuing its decades of consulting services to the BMA, Mueller provided complete mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection services for the climate-controlled build-out of these two centers. The project included the addition of new fire suppression systems for the centers and upgrades to three vaults on the third floor to meet new regulations from the Baltimore City Fire Marshal. Mueller also provided lighting design for offices and workspaces.
