University of Delaware • Newark, Delaware
The renovation of the Harrington Residence Hall Complex represented a major milestone in meeting the University of Delaware’s goal of creating vibrant student communities with comfortable living space and a variety of amenities. The 1960s-era complex, encompassing approximately 133,000 square feet of space on the East Campus, required substantial upgrades to its interior finishes, fixtures, and systems. In addition to modernizing the five dormitory buildings, which accommodate more than 500 students, the project included major upgrades to the complex’s student activities building, which offers a fitness center, a new market, lounges, and quiet and group study space.
Mueller Associates designed the replacement of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems throughout the complex, including underground utilities such as steam and condensate service, electrical service, domestic cold water, domestic hot water distribution, and recirculating pipe distribution. A direct digital control system was provided and serves as an extension of the campus-wide building automation system. A building infrastructure and wire management system for voice/data/CATV/security cabling and equipment was also provided.
