Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington

A New Library for the Study of our First President

Set on 15 wooded acres, the new Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington is located across the street from Mount Vernon, Washington’s estate. The three-level library, commissioned by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, features offices, meeting rooms, and spaces for special collections and rare volumes. Two rare book rooms and a vault house of more than 100 volumes owned by George and Martha Washington in elegant, climate-controlled spaces.

A separate Scholar’s Housing facility is located near the new Library.  The Scholar’s Housing facility (approximately 5,700 GSF) consists of guest rooms with private bathrooms, a kitchen, a living/dining room, a toilet room for common areas, and support spaces.

"The jury felt the Fred W. Smith National Library was a well-crafted high-quality project…the design is stately yet comfortable in its bucolic setting. The library is a well-conceived project that honors the Washington legacy with a timeless and well-scaled building."
