Medical/Surgical Pavilion

Expanding Critical Infrastructure to Support a Major New Medical Facility

To meet the significant utility demands of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s new medical/surgical pavilion, Mueller Associates engineered a significant expansion of the campus’ central utility plant (CUP). The new pavilion—an infill addition of approximately 477,213 square feet—introduces substantial clinical capacity, including 156 private patient rooms, 31 operating rooms, 32 exam rooms, and advanced spaces supporting transplant, orthopedics, neurosciences, and intensive care services.

The CUP expansion was essential to powering this new clinical environment and ensuring long-term reliability for the hospital’s operations. Mueller’s design supports both immediate utility needs and future campus growth in a constrained urban setting.

Engineering Systems that Power Next-Generation Patient Care

Mueller’s engineering scope included major upgrades to the chilled-water, steam, and electrical systems, as well as extensive modifications to campus distribution networks. Key components of the CUP expansion included:

  • Installation of a 3,700-ton duplex chiller to meet significant new cooling loads

  • A 100,000-pound-per-hour high-pressure steam boiler to support heating, sterilization, and medical processes

  • New pumps, boiler feedwater equipment, and water treatment systems

  • Upgraded monitoring and control systems enabling greater operational visibility and system performance

  • Electrical service improvements to support increased loads and campus resilience

Existing campus systems also required strategic modifications:

  • Extension and reconfiguration of campus chilled water distribution piping

  • Upgrades to campus steam distribution infrastructure

  • Modifications to electrical service feeders to support the CUP, pavilion, and future development

These upgrades ensure that the new hospital facility—and the broader Georgetown campus—have a robust, efficient, and redundant infrastructure foundation capable of supporting modern medicine and evolving clinical technologies.

Infrastructure Supporting a Modern, Patient-Centered Pavilion

The engineering work enables the pavilion’s advanced clinical and teaching environments, including expanded emergency services, state-of-the-art operating rooms with enhanced visualization technology, and specialty care for transplant, neuroscience, and orthopedic patients. The project is the largest healthcare investment in the history of Washington, D.C., serving more than 36,000 annual emergency visits and providing an elevated clinical experience for both patients and medical students.

By delivering a CUP expansion that is efficient, flexible, and future-focused, Mueller supports MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s commitment to exceptional patient care and long-term campus resilience.
