Bowie State University
Martin Luther King, Jr. Communication Arts and Humanities Building
The new Martin Luther King, Jr. Communication Arts and Humanities Building at Bowie State University represents a bold investment in the future of communication, culture, and technology. As the university’s most utilized academic facility, this 192,000-square-foot interdisciplinary hub unites programs in media, performing arts, and the humanities—advancing BSU’s mission to empower voices of change and celebrate its legacy as Maryland’s oldest HBCU.
Engineering Innovation for Collaboration
In partnership with Whiting-Turner and Perkins&Will, Mueller Associates designed integrated mechanical and electrical systems that support an exceptional range of academic and performance environments. Advanced acoustical, electrical, and mechanical systems serve dual television studios, radio stations, and recording labs alongside 18 technology-rich active learning classrooms. A 1,500-seat auditorium anchors the facility, supported by custom-engineered air distribution and sound isolation systems that achieve superior comfort and acoustic performance.
Flexible Systems for the Future
Mueller’s infrastructure enables flexibility and adaptability across academic departments, allowing spaces to evolve in response to emerging technologies. Robust mechanical and electrical systems support professional-grade broadcast, simulation, and multimedia instruction while maintaining precise environmental control for sensitive production equipment.
Sustainability and Legacy
Earning LEED Gold certification, the building’s sustainable systems—including high-efficiency HVAC design, intelligent lighting controls, and energy-recovery technologies—reflect BSU’s commitment to responsible growth and innovation. Through thoughtful engineering, Mueller ensures that the facility not only performs efficiently but also honors Dr. King’s enduring message of progress through education.
