Northern Virginia Science Center

A new museum supports exploratory STEM learning

The Northern Virginia Science Center (NoVaSci) represents a major expansion of the Science Museum of Virginia’s statewide mission to foster informal STEM education. Located in the Dulles Technology Corridor, the 65,000-square-foot facility will be the region’s first dedicated interactive science museum, providing hands-on learning experiences for families, school groups, and visitors of all ages. The Center is designed to spark curiosity, broaden access to STEM, and reflect Northern Virginia’s identity as a global technology hub. The project is currently under construction and expected to open in 2027.

A Purpose-Built Destination for Exploration

Led by HGA as the project’s architect, and Mueller providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering, NoVaSci features more than 35,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space supported by classrooms, studios, and flexible learning areas designed to accommodate a wide range of educational programming. Additional amenities include a café, a gift shop, administrative offices, and two outdoor terraces that extend learning opportunities beyond the building footprint. These program elements collectively support NoVaSci’s mission to deliver high-quality, inquiry-based learning experiences.

Immersive Storytelling Through a Signature Dome Theater

A significant highlight of the project is the dome theater, designed for large-format films and adaptable for future planetarium use. The theater will serve as an immersive anchor for the visitor experience, offering dynamic opportunities to integrate science, storytelling, and visual exploration.

Engineering a High-Performance, Visitor-Focused Facility

The building’s systems support heavily programmed exhibit environments, diverse classroom uses, and rapid visitor turnover while maintaining occupant comfort and energy efficiency. Mechanical and electrical systems promote flexibility to accommodate future exhibit changes, technology upgrades, and evolving educational needs.

Building the Region’s Next Innovation Landmark

Through its interactive exhibits, educational programming, and high-performance building systems, NoVaSci will expand STEM accessibility in the region and inspire the next generation of scientists, technologists, and innovators.
