At the heart of George Mason University’s Arlington campus, Fuse at Mason Square stands as a next-generation hub for innovation, research, and technology. This $250 million, 360,500-square-foot facility—formerly known as the Institute for Digital InnovAtion (IDIA)—is designed to advance education and interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics, and cyber-physical systems.

Envisioned as a catalyst for collaboration between academia, industry, and the community, Fuse at Mason Square sets a new standard for high-performance, sustainable STEM environments. The project is pursuing LEED Platinum certification and incorporates forward-thinking strategies that position it as net-zero ready.

Engineering for a Connected Future

Mueller Associates provides electrical engineering and plumbing design for this landmark facility through a public-private partnership (P3) with the Mason Innovation Partners team, which includes Edgemoor, Clark Construction, and Page.

Mueller’s systems support a dense, interdisciplinary program of labs, classrooms, innovation spaces, and incubators. Within the building’s 24 specialized lab modules—dedicated to fields ranging from robotics to media studies—precision engineering ensures optimal performance, safety, and adaptability. Electrical systems integrate advanced cyberinfrastructure, high-efficiency lighting, and robust distribution networks designed to meet evolving technological needs.

Sustainability and High Performance

Fuse at Mason Square aims to be one of the most sustainable academic buildings in the Mid-Atlantic. Mueller’s engineering solutions contribute to LEED Platinum certification and a net-zero energy-ready design through:

  • Photovoltaic fins integrated along the façade to capture renewable solar energy

  • Smart lighting and control systems that minimize energy consumption

  • High-efficiency water distribution and plumbing systems to reduce usage and waste

  • Advanced energy modeling that ensures peak operational efficiency

Together, these systems create an environmentally responsible and resilient facility that supports Mason’s vision of innovation through sustainability.

Empowering Innovation and Collaboration

Fuse at Mason Square organizes research, learning, and industry engagement into “vertical neighborhoods” — interconnected floors linked by a collaborative “Main Street” spine. The building will host graduate education, corporate innovation labs, co-working environments, and retail and event spaces, creating an ecosystem that brings together students, researchers, and entrepreneurs under one roof.
