Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory Building

Engineering the Systems that Power Discovery and Collaboration

At the University of Delaware, the Patrick T. Harker Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory (ISE Lab) serves as a dynamic center for teaching, research, and innovation. This 200,000-square-foot, four-story facility was designed to advance cross-disciplinary learning by bringing students and faculty together in shared environments that connect science, technology, and engineering in new ways.

The $140 million building houses the Delaware Environmental Institute, the Energy Institute, and multiple core research facilities—each supported by robust, flexible engineering systems that enable experimentation, collaboration, and real-time problem-solving.

Engineering for Flexibility and Performance

Mueller Associates provided comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering design for this advanced research and instructional facility in partnership with Ayers Saint Gross. The ISE Lab features a seamless integration of classrooms, teaching laboratories, and research suites, strategically arranged side by side to encourage fluid movement and collaboration between teaching and research activities.

To support a range of complex programs—including microscopy and imaging suites, materials labs, and a 9,000-square-foot clean room—Mueller’s systems were designed for redundancy, adaptability, and long-term reliability. The infrastructure includes:

  • Flexible HVAC systems with precise temperature and humidity control for specialized environments

  • Robust power distribution and emergency backup to support sensitive research equipment

  • Energy-efficient lighting and control systems for both teaching and laboratory spaces

  • Advanced plumbing systems serving laboratory, process, and clean room functions

Sustainability and Campus Integration

The ISE Lab embodies the University of Delaware’s commitment to sustainability and responsible campus growth. Mueller’s design incorporated numerous high-performance features, including energy recovery systems, efficient water use, and optimized airflow management to minimize energy demand. The building is also connected to a new campus chilled water plant, providing a reliable and efficient source of cooling for current and future campus needs.

Together, these systems enable significant reductions in operating costs and carbon footprint while supporting uninterrupted research activities and occupant comfort.

A Catalyst for Research and Innovation

More than just a building, the ISE Lab represents a new model for interdisciplinary education—where engineering, environmental science, and technology converge to address global challenges. Through integrated MEP systems that balance performance and sustainability, Mueller Associates helped deliver a facility that equips the next generation of scientists and engineers to think beyond boundaries.
