National Zoo
As part of its decades-long partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, Mueller Associates has supported numerous projects at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC. Over nearly two decades, Mueller’s work has focused on improving animal habitats, conservation and research spaces, security systems, and visitor amenities—often within active, highly trafficked environments that remain open to the public.
The Bird House and “Marvelous Migration” Exhibit
Mueller’s most notable recent project at the National Zoo is the comprehensive renovation of the historic Bird House, home to the new Marvelous Migration exhibit. This state-of-the-art exhibition explores one of the most remarkable phenomena in the natural world—the migration of birds across the Western Hemisphere—through expanded exhibits, enhanced animal holding areas, and integrated education and research spaces.
The renovation brought the facility up to modern standards, improving environmental conditions, animal visibility, and the visitor experience while supporting the Zoo’s broader conservation and educational mission. Mueller’s engineering solutions were carefully coordinated to serve sensitive animal environments while accommodating immersive exhibit design and high visitor volumes.
Conservation Pavilion and Visitor Amenities
Mueller also provided engineering services for the National Zoo’s Conservation Pavilion, a new 7,500-square-foot visitor amenity and education facility. The two-story steel-and-glass structure features vaulted ceilings and expansive windows that bring natural light into the space while framing views of the surrounding landscape. The pavilion supports events, public programs, and interpretive activities, extending the Zoo’s educational reach beyond traditional exhibits.
Supporting Diverse Habitats Across the Zoo
In addition to the Bird House and Conservation Pavilion, Mueller has completed engineering improvements at several of the Zoo’s signature habitats and exhibits, including the Great Ape House, Giant Panda Habitat, American Bison Yard, and Great Cats Exhibit. Across these projects, Mueller’s work has balanced animal welfare, operational performance, and visitor engagement—delivering systems that quietly support conservation, research, and public education.
