Alfred W. Harris Academic Commons
The Alfred W. Harris Academic Commons now stands as the largest building constructed on the Virginia State University (VSU) campus. Serving as the intellectual center of the north campus, the 174,000-square-foot facility brings together the College of Humanities and Sciences, the College of Education, Military Science, and the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER).
Connected Buildings Supporting Academic Applied Learning
Designed by Page, with Mueller Associates providing electrical engineering services, the Academic Commons is organized into two interconnected building sections and supports a wide range of academic and co-curricular activities. One wing houses HPER and ROTC programs, featuring specialized spaces for physical training, sports management, recreational sports, and aquatics, including dedicated sports labs and a full swimming pool.
The second wing accommodates an array of academic and creative disciplines with general classrooms, media and broadcast production labs, language and literature labs, art and design studios, ceramics labs, a black box theater, multipurpose auditoriums, distance learning environments, and faculty offices. An exhibition gallery and vibrant study areas promote interdisciplinary collaboration and student engagement.
A Campus Destination for Collaboration and Campus Life
Now a central gathering point for students and faculty, the Academic Commons offers state-of-the-art teaching environments, performance venues, and recreational facilities that elevate both academic and campus life. Its size and scope mark a transformative investment in the university’s future, replacing the former Daniel Gym and Harris Hall and establishing a signature presence on the north campus.
