Artis Center for Adaptive Innovation and Creativity

Where Art and Science Converge Through Engineering

The Artis Center for Adaptive Innovation and Creativity redefines how learning environments unite performance, research, and technology. As the largest capital project in Radford University’s history, the 178,000-square-foot facility brings together health sciences, fine arts, and STEM disciplines under one roof—an ambitious vision made possible by Mueller Associates’ integrated MEP design.

Engineering for Convergence

Collaborating with Hord Coplan Macht and William Rawn Associates, Mueller developed systems that support vastly different environmental and acoustic needs, from laboratories and simulation spaces to dance studios and a 450-seat proscenium theater. Custom air-handling and exhaust systems maintain precise temperature, humidity, and air quality, ensuring safe conditions for both artistic and scientific activity.

Performance and Precision

The design features high-efficiency, water-cooled chillers, energy recovery systems, and intelligent lighting controls that adapt to programmatic use. Sophisticated acoustic strategies balance the needs of performance spaces with those of adjacent teaching and health science environments, allowing the building to perform seamlessly as a single, interdisciplinary hub.

Sustainable Innovation

Mueller’s MEP infrastructure enables energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and long-term flexibility. Smart LED lighting, water-saving systems, and energy recovery technology reflect Radford’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence.

Collaboration Elevated

The result is an adaptive, high-performance building that fosters creativity, collaboration, and discovery—demonstrating how thoughtful engineering can shape the future of integrated learning.
