Morgan State University
Calvin and Tina Tyler Hall
Calvin and Tina Tyler Hall is a bold new addition to Morgan State University’s historic urban campus, uniting all student services and administrative functions into a single, welcoming destination. Led by the design team at GWWO Architects and Teeple Architects, the 139,000-square-foot LEED Gold facility enhances the student experience by streamlining access to admissions, financial aid, recruitment, career development, and other essential resources. Featuring a three-story atrium, a 250-seat auditorium, offices, lounges, and flexible meeting rooms, the building serves as a vibrant, technology-rich environment for student engagement.
Architecturally, the building bridges Morgan’s neoclassical academic quad and the modern campus commons. Its sweeping curved walls, extensive glass curtain wall, and expressive form create a dynamic, modern “front door” for prospective and current students. Dual entrances—at both the surrounding neighborhood and the elevated campus level—provide an intuitive and accessible arrival sequence that welcomes visitors from all directions.
Engineering for Comfort, Performance, and Sustainability
Mueller provided comprehensive mechanical engineering services for this landmark facility, the fifth project our firm has completed for Morgan State University. The building is served by a dedicated heating plant and is connected to the campus’s central chilled water distribution system, ensuring reliable year-round performance. Energy recovery systems, LED lighting, daylight-responsive controls, and a hybrid approach to ventilation support both occupant comfort and the university’s long-term sustainability goals.
Additional green design features—such as a planted green roof, locally sourced materials within a 500-mile radius, and strategies to mitigate heat island effect—contribute to the building’s LEED Gold certification and reduce its environmental footprint.
