Towson University
College of Health Professions
The new College of Health Professions (CHP) at Towson University marks a transformative step for healthcare education in Maryland. As the university’s largest academic facility to date—and the state’s most advanced center for interdisciplinary training—this 240,000-square-foot building unites multiple health disciplines under one roof. Mueller Associates provided comprehensive mechanical and electrical engineering design for the $140 million project, enabling a high-performance environment where students, faculty, and researchers learn, collaborate, and innovate.
Integrated Systems for Specialized Spaces
Designed in collaboration with Perkins&Will and JMT Architecture, Mueller’s systems serve a complex array of environments:
-
Ten specialty teaching labs, six simulation labs, and multiple research spaces with precise temperature, humidity, and air-quality control
-
Dedicated HVAC and electrical infrastructure supporting medical imaging and simulation equipment
-
A 300-seat auditorium optimized for acoustics and occupant comfort
These systems maintain uninterrupted operation for critical teaching and research functions, ensuring a safe, reliable, and responsive learning environment.
Sustainability in Action
Sustainable design strategies resulted in LEED Gold certification, incorporating high-efficiency HVAC systems, intelligent lighting controls, and energy-recovery technologies that promote wellness and lower operational costs. The building’s resilience and adaptability enable future program expansion and the evolution of instructional technologies.
A Foundation for the Future
Home to Maryland’s only accredited occupational therapy program and the region’s second-largest nursing program, the CHP building positions Towson University as a leader in health science education. Mueller’s engineering solutions advance the university’s mission to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.
