Garvey Hall
Garvey Hall is Catholic University’s first major campus-wide hub in two decades, creating a vibrant new destination for dining, community life, and student support. Designed in harmony with the university’s Collegiate-Gothic architectural identity, the 350-seat facility offers four indoor dining areas, two outdoor patios for meals and events, and warm gathering spaces enhanced by indoor and outdoor fireplaces. The hall expands dining capacity, elevates food quality, and introduces fresh, customizable, and healthy culinary stations that reflect evolving student preferences.
Beyond dining, Garvey Hall strengthens student success by housing the university’s Center for Academic and Career Success on the lower level. The suite includes private advising offices, flexible meeting rooms, and a live/virtual/hybrid programming space that supports academic counseling, career exploration, alumni engagement, and employer interactions. A new exterior stairway improves campus connectivity, linking nearby residence halls, the Pryzbyla Center, and adjacent academic buildings.
MEP Systems Designed for Comfort, Efficiency, and High-Volume Dining
In collaboration with Perkins Eastman, Mueller provided full mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering services for this innovative student-life facility, ensuring all systems support the university’s operational, sustainability, and student experience goals. Dining facilities traditionally present energy-intensive challenges, and Garvey Hall’s performance is elevated through carefully integrated, efficient MEP solutions.
Key engineering features include:
-
High-efficiency HVAC systems designed to manage varying loads from food preparation, dining occupancy, and multi-use gathering spaces
-
Energy-efficient kitchen ventilation and exhaust systems tailored for heavy food-service operations
-
Advanced lighting and controls to optimize energy use across dining, social, and support environments
-
Robust plumbing systems supporting multiple food stations, preparation areas, and high-volume service demands
-
Environmentally conscious design strategies help the facility achieve LEED Silver certification, a notable achievement for a dining-focused building
Garvey Hall’s MEP systems were designed to complement seamless material flows, coordinated back-of-house operations, and flexible serving formats, ensuring efficiency for staff and comfort for diners.
A Welcoming Student Hub Strengthening Campus Community
With its blend of traditional Collegiate-Gothic architecture, modern food-service operations, and integrated student-success services, Garvey Hall creates a welcoming environment that supports daily campus life, enhances pedestrian connectivity, and reinforces Catholic University’s investment in student well-being and long-term growth.
