Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center

Bridging Tradition and Innovation

The Torggler Fine Arts Center, a visual arts masterpiece, stands as Christopher Newport University’s latest addition, seamlessly blending modern design with the Neo-Georgian campus aesthetic. The 88,060 SF space not only serves as the university’s Fine Arts hub but also accommodates the Peninsula Fine Arts Center for Newport News, Virginia.

With an emphasis on flexibility and functionality, the center boasts gallery and programming spaces, an art history lecture hall, hands-on galleries, and state-of-the-art studios. Designed to connect harmoniously with the existing Ferguson Center for the Performing Arts, the Torggler Center accommodates visiting exhibitions and anticipates hosting renowned collections from institutions like the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Notable features include 8,000 SF of new gallery space, a children’s discovery gallery, and a theater, all meeting American Alliance of Museums (AAM) accreditation standards. The facility also addresses the university’s growing arts programs, incorporating new academic facilities, studios, and classrooms for various artistic disciplines.

The design pays homage to the Ferguson Center’s architectural legacy by drawing inspiration from its character, originally crafted by the renowned architect I.M. Pei. The dramatic entry point features three tiered glass domes, creating a visually striking and welcoming public face. The transition from the more modern Ferguson Center to the neo-classical main campus is artfully achieved through an extended arcade, maintaining a consistent aesthetic.

The Center also catalyzes artistic exploration, providing an unparalleled space for exhibitions, education, and community engagement. Mueller’s engineering prowess extends to the HVAC systems, catering to diverse needs such as specialized exhaust systems for industrial workspaces and optimal temperature and humidity control within the expansive gallery space.

The Torggler Center is more than a building; it’s a testament to the intersection of tradition and innovation, shaping the future of fine arts education and appreciation at Christopher Newport University.

Glavé & Holmes

"In our current climate, the beauty of a museum, a good museum, is that it's a safe space for dialogue. It is a place where you can confront your past, where you can appreciate something you've never seen before, where you have exposure. It is a place where you can feel sage to experience that ... so I'm really, really excited about this because this is a game-changer."
