Carrington Hall School of Nursing

Engineering a Next-Generation Home for Nursing Education

Carrington Hall has served as the home of the University of North Carolina’s School of Nursing since 1969. With evolving clinical training methods and an aging building infrastructure, UNC is undertaking a comprehensive transformation of the facility in partnership with Ayers Saint Gross and Little Diversified Architectural Consulting. The project will replace the original structure with a new 119,000-square-foot building, seamlessly connected to the existing 2005 addition that houses administrative and research functions.

A Strategic Expansion Within UNC’s Health Sciences Precinct

Located in the heart of the university’s prominent Health Sciences precinct—home to the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Dentistry—the renewed Carrington Hall strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration and contributes to a vibrant academic and clinical corridor. The design establishes a new front yard for the School of Nursing and shared outdoor gathering and collaboration areas with neighboring facilities, supporting outdoor instruction, student engagement, and special events.

The new facility will feature high-fidelity simulation suites, flexible skills labs, research space, technology-rich classrooms, and the Education Innovation Simulation Learning Environment (EISLE). These spaces will expand the school’s training capacity and support its mission of preparing future healthcare leaders.
