Smithsonian Institution
Bezos Learning Center
The Bezos Learning Center (BLC) is a cornerstone of the ongoing transformation of the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall, introducing a new destination dedicated to education, engagement, and expanded visitor experiences. Led by Perkins&Will and envisioned as a pan-institutional resource, the 90,000-square-foot center establishes a dynamic new destination for hands-on learning, public programming, and virtual outreach designed to reach underserved communities in Washington, D.C. and across the country.
A New Chapter Enabled by Historic Philanthropy
A landmark gift from Jeff Bezos is supporting exhibit enhancements and the creation of this world-class education facility. The project establishes new opportunities for collaboration across the Smithsonian Institution while expanding the museum’s ability to inspire future generations through science, technology, and exploration.
Integrated with a Major Revitalization Effort
Constructed in parallel with the museum’s multi-phase revitalization, also engineered by Mueller, the new facility occupies the east end of the campus and is carefully coordinated with ongoing building rehabilitation to allow continued partial operations.
The scope includes:
- Renovations to loading dock and support areas
- East Terrace and site improvements
- Integration of new and existing building systems
- Connections that seamlessly tie the addition into the historic museum fabric
Engineering coordination was critical to maintaining operational continuity while advancing long-term modernization goals.
Spaces for Learning, Gathering, and Exploration
The facility includes:
- Flexible education environments
- Advanced audiovisual and technology infrastructure
- Spaces designed for hybrid and remote programming
- A large fast-casual restaurant
- Astronomy Park and Observatory
- Permanent installation of the Phoebe Waterman Haas Observatory
- Outdoor terrace enhancements
Together, these elements create a vibrant ecosystem for learning — supporting discovery both indoors and outdoors.
Engineering for a Flexible, Future-Ready Facility
Mueller is providing integrated engineering systems designed to support evolving program needs. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing strateges are coordinated through a combination of campus utility services and dedicated equipment to ensure:
- Energy efficiency
- Operational resilience
- System flexibility for changing exhibit and education needs
- Seamless integration with ongoing campus construction
The result is a high-performance infrastructure platform that supports the Smithsonian’s educational mission while ensuring reliability, maintainability, and long-term stewardship.
