Crossing Gallery and Education Center

A New Education Center Celebrates Virginia History

For several decades, the Frontier Culture Museum has envisioned building a new gallery to explore the intersection between the diverse cultures of the Shenandoah Valley of southwestern Virginia. With the new Crossing Gallery and Education Center, the museum will have an indoor facility featuring galleries for permanent and rotating exhibits, studios for education and school group programs, special event space, and visitor amenities.

The 40,200 SF Crossing Gallery and Education Center will house permanent and temporary exhibits alongside ticketing, a gift shop, and administrative spaces. The project also entails the design and construction of a new 2,000 SF collection storage building, a 7,500 SF maintenance building, and the renovation of the existing 16,400 SF welcome center to introduce new educational spaces.

The Education Center will expand upon the stories, themes, and programs available in the museum’s existing outdoor exhibits with expanded educational capabilities and space for more visitors in a fully accessible facility.

    Frontier Culture Museum Feasibility Study

"This project represents one of the final elements of the Museum's long-range plan. Once completed, the new 40,000 square feet facility will enable the Museum to better tell the story of immigration and cultural evolution in the Shenandoah Valley, and America."
