City of Manassas
Manassas Museum
Located in Baldwin Park and prominently positioned along one of Downtown Manassas’ primary corridors, the Manassas Museum serves as a cultural and civic anchor for the community. A comprehensive addition and renovation transformed the historic museum into a more accessible, flexible, and engaging destination—strengthening its connection to the surrounding park, downtown, and regional visitors.
The project added 4,800 gross square feet to the original 6,400-square-foot facility, introducing a new special exhibit hall, administrative wing, offices, and upgraded support spaces. Renovations to the existing building created expanded permanent gallery space with visual connections into improved collections storage areas, reinforcing transparency between exhibition and preservation.
Architecture that Activates Indoor and Outdoor Space
Led by GWWO Architects, the design redefined the museum’s relationship to its site by removing a formerly isolating courtyard wall. In its place, a redesigned courtyard and amphitheater seamlessly connect the museum to the adjacent lawn, creating new opportunities for outdoor programming, events, and informal gathering.
New entry corridors and exhibit spaces with transparent glazing establish a visual dialogue between interior galleries and exterior spaces, improving visitor flow and activating the museum’s public realm. The addition respects the scale and character of the historic structure, preserving views of the building’s iconic copper cupola while establishing a contemporary civic presence visible from the nearby train station.
Engineering for Collections Care and Environmental Stability
Mueller Associates provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering for the addition and renovation, addressing key challenges related to artifact preservation, seasonal humidity fluctuations, and limited mechanical space within the historic structure.
Located in central Virginia, the museum requires stable environmental conditions to protect a wide range of collections. Mueller’s design integrated both passive and active strategies to maintain precise temperature and humidity control, including refrigerant-based cooling, natural gas heating, and variable-air-volume systems with energy recovery. Dedicated outdoor air handling units and electric resistance humidifiers support consistent moisture control, while high-performance glazing minimizes solar heat gain.
Integrated Systems Supporting Performance and Efficiency
A centralized building automation system provides real-time monitoring and control of building systems, optimizing energy efficiency while ensuring reliable environmental conditions throughout galleries, collections storage, and administrative spaces. These systems are carefully integrated to remain unobtrusive, supporting the museum’s mission without detracting from the visitor experience or historic architecture.
A Civic Landmark Renewed
The expanded Manassas Museum now functions as a vibrant center for education, storytelling, and community connection. Through thoughtful design and carefully engineered systems, the project enhances visitor engagement, protects valuable collections, and reinforces the museum’s role as a key piece of civic architecture—honoring the past while supporting the future of Downtown Manassas.
