National Zoo
Mueller’s extensive and longstanding portfolio and partnership with the Smithsonian Institution includes numerous projects at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. Our work at the National Zoo spans almost two decades. We have completed a variety of engineering projects to improve animal habitat areas, conservation spaces, security systems, and visitor amenities.
Our most notable and recent project is the Bird House, which features the new “Marvelous Migration Exhibit,” a state-of-the-art exhibition space exploring one of the most sensational occurrences in the natural world—the migration of birds in the Western Hemisphere. The renovation includes expanded exhibits and animal holding areas with a commitment to research and educational spaces, revitalizing the exhibits to modern standards, improving the visibility of the animals, and telling the story of bird migration and adaptation.
In addition, Mueller’s engineers recently worked on the National Zoo’s new Conservation Pavilion. The new, 7,500 SF facility serves as a visitor amenity, event venue, and education space. The two-story steel and glass structure features vaulted ceilings and large windows on the upper level, allowing for abundant natural light and framed views of the outside.
Other recent projects include the Conservation Pavilion and improvements to the Great Ape House, Giant Panda Habitat, American Bison Yard, and Great Cats Exhibit.
