Family Theater

Conversion of Existing Space Into a New Theater

The creation of a new Family Theater at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts involved the transformation of an existing film theater into a new 324-seat space for live performances. The project challenged Mueller’s team of engineers to accommodate new air handling units and ductwork within the theater’s limited existing infrastructure. Requirements also included minimizing energy requirements while also meeting strict acoustical demands. The renovation included the installation of new HVAC systems, including automatic temperature controls, for the gallery, stage, lobbies, booth, and restrooms. The air handling system serving the stage area allowed for operation with 100 percent outdoor air to accommodate the painting of scenery and props within the stage space.
