Engineering a Holistic Environment for Learning, Wellness, and Innovation

The Education & Health Sciences Center (EHSC) at Frostburg State University redefines how academic and wellness spaces can coexist to support student success. This 100,000-square-foot facility serves as a multidisciplinary hub, integrating academic programs, clinical training, and comprehensive health services under one roof.

Home to departments within the College of Education, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and College of Business, the EHSC also houses the Information Technology Department, the Brady Health Center, and Counseling and Psychological Services—consolidating essential academic and student-care functions into a single, vibrant destination at the heart of campus.

Engineering for Integration and Impact

Mueller Associates partnered with Ayers Saint Gross to provide mechanical and electrical engineering design for this multifaceted project. The challenge: create highly specialized systems that support both academic and clinical environments while maintaining comfort, efficiency, and seamless operations.

Mueller’s design integrates zoned mechanical systems and dedicated air-handling units to serve teaching laboratories, simulation suites, and healthcare spaces with distinct environmental requirements. The HVAC infrastructure prioritizes energy efficiency, flexibility, and acoustic performance—ensuring that both classrooms and clinical training spaces function optimally.

The facility features active-learning classrooms, simulation labs, and clinical training suites that prepare students for real-world professional settings.
Flexible power distribution and lighting systems accommodate evolving pedagogical models and technology needs.

Within the Brady Health Center and Counseling Services, Mueller’s systems emphasize air quality, thermal comfort, and privacy, supporting a holistic approach to student wellness.

These engineering solutions align with Frostburg’s mission to create environments that enhance learning outcomes, well-being, and innovation for its diverse student community.

A New Standard for Campus Vitality

Beyond serving as an academic facility, the EHSC strengthens the university’s campus identity as a community hub for health and education.
Its strategic location and integrated design promote collaboration across disciplines while supporting Frostburg State’s long-term sustainability and student-success initiatives.
