Health and Human Sciences Complex

A Modern Home for Health Sciences and Entrepreneurship

Within the reimagined Cole Field House at the University of Maryland, College Park, the Health and Human Sciences Complex (HHSC) converts shell space and portions of the historic south wing into a dynamic environment, supporting interdisciplinary education, research, and innovation. The project includes the renovation and fit-out of more than 168,000 gross square feet to create space tailored to evolving academic needs.

A Collaborative Environment for Health and Innovation

Under a design-build contract led by Clark Construction and Stantec, the complex brings together programs within the School of Public Health, including the Institute for Applied Environmental Health, Department of Kinesiology, Center for Healthy Families, and Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, alongside the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The project provides wet and dry laboratories, departmental spaces, Dean’s offices, and collaboration areas that support research, teaching, and community engagement.

Integrating Systems Within an Existing Framework

The fit-out connects to existing chilled water, heating water, and electrical infrastructure while evaluating and supplementing systems to meet program demands. Existing air systems were adapted to serve the new layout, balancing performance with the constraints of working within a historic structure and previously constructed shell space.

Advancing Sustainability Goals

In alignment with campus objectives, the project is designed to support LEED Silver certification, incorporating strategies that promote efficient operations and long-term environmental performance while enhancing occupant comfort.
