NMWA Renovation and Revitalization

Preserving a Legacy of Women’s Creativity Through Engineering Innovation

The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) stands as the world’s first major museum solely dedicated to championing women artists. Located in a 1908 Classical Revival landmark—originally a Masonic Temple and later a theater—the museum has long been an icon of art, history, and advocacy in Washington, D.C.

Mueller Associates has proudly partnered with NMWA for nearly four decades, providing mechanical and electrical engineering design through every chapter of the museum’s evolution—from its 1987 conversion to its transformative 2023 renovation.

A Legacy Reimagined

In collaboration with Sandra Vicchio & Associates and Marshall Craft Associates, Mueller provided comprehensive MEP design for the NMWA’s revitalization. This project modernized building systems while preserving the historic character and artistic integrity. The design introduced a standalone chilled-water plant, digital energy management, and upgraded plumbing and fire protection systems, all while enhancing visitor comfort and accessibility.

Engineering Renewal & Preservation

To preserve clean gallery walls and maximize ceiling heights, Mueller’s team reimagined air distribution systems, eliminating intrusive grilles and diffusers. Linear floor-level return air openings maintain ideal humidity and temperature for art conservation without distracting from the exhibits. The museum’s Great Hall, library, and 180-seat performance hall were carefully refurbished with new finishes, lighting, and climate control systems that honor the building’s historic architecture.

Honoring Women Through Design

The renovated museum reopened in 2023 as a renewed beacon of creativity, housing over 6,000 works by women artists. Its revitalized infrastructure enables flexible exhibition design, energy efficiency, and long-term stewardship of its collection, ensuring that the museum’s mission thrives for generations to come.

NWMA’s renovation and revitalization were featured in Mueller’s Momentum newsletter, as well as he magazine Papyrus, published by the International Association of Museum Facility Administrators (IAMFA). It was also prominently profiled in The Washington Post, The New York Times, NPR, Vanity Fair, and PBS.
