Eisenhower Theater

The complete renovation of the 1,164-seat Eisenhower Theater at the Kennedy Center entailed new HVAC supply, return, and exhaust distribution systems, lighting and power, and plumbing fixtures and piping systems. Modifications and re-routing of the ductwork required careful planning due to limited space. The original HVAC system serving the stage house could not be operated during performances because of the high supply of air velocity that generated noise and caused movement in hanging scenery drops, resulting in elevated and uncomfortable temperatures on stage. Modifications to the system’s distribution, control, and operation were provided to correct these operational problems.

The renovation included significant architectural modifications, including the complete reconstruction of the orchestra-level slab to address improved wheelchair-accessible seating positions and provide a cross-aisle. The box tier and first tier levels were also reconfigured to accommodate wheelchair access. New sound and light locks, improved box boom and torm lighting positions, and improved speaker locations required architectural modifications to the theater’s sidewalls. A new sound system, provision of new balcony lighting rails, and installation of lighting catwalks at the theater ceiling were also included in the renovation. ADA accessibility improvements to public toilet rooms at all levels of the theater access were implemented. At the A level, existing dressing rooms were restructured entirely to meet the current demands of the theater.
