George Mason University
Art and Design Building
George Mason University’s Art and Design Building celebrates the visual arts with a large gallery; classrooms; and studios for painting, drawing, digital arts, graphic design, sculpture, photography, and printmaking. The building also includes a lecture hall, student lounge, and cafĂ©.
Part of the new Creative Quadrangle, the three-story building is light-filled and energy-efficient. The building features an open stair with an interior designed to optimize connections, creativity, and flexibility. A demountable exterior allows for a future addition and serves as a frame for mounting art.
The campus chilled water and high-temperature heating water systems serve the building, and air is supplied from variable air volume custom penthouse air handling units mounted on the roof. Exhaust air from the art spaces is discharged through high-plume exhaust fans. A switchboard and standby generator provide power, and the building features a central lighting system with specialty lighting in the art spaces.
